An Architect's Favorite Home Finds

As an architect I look at a home as a whole: light, proportion, texture and how a space gets used every day. With kids, it also has to hold up. These are the pieces that meet both standards.

Lighting changes everything

If a room feels off, the lighting is usually why. Warm lamps at different heights do more than any paint color.

Texture that's washable

Linen, boucle, wool and jute add warmth. I look for pieces that can go in the wash or wipe clean.

Storage that looks intentional

Toys, shoes and backpacks need a home. Baskets and closed storage keep things calm.

Finishing touches

Vases, frames, books and a few objects with a story. Fewer, better pieces always win.

Architect tip: hang art so the center is about 57 inches from the floor. It works in almost every room.
